When Illinois Farm Supply was formed, similar organizations were being established across the Midwest. Each began as single-state organizations. So, in the 1960s when Illinois Farm Supply ventured to merge with Farm Bureau Service Company of Iowa and later Wisconsin Farmco Service Cooperative (both Farm Bureau affiliated organizations), it was a paradigm shift for the business. Changes in the farm economy demanded additional economies of scale to spread the rising costs of doing business. Farmers on the boards of directors for each statewide cooperative carefully considered the opportunity and eventually agreed merger offered the economies of scale needed to continue to thrive on behalf of the farmers-owners. The name of the combined organization, FS Services, Incorporated, reflected the common branding of the merged organizations.
