FS Cooperatives Earn Performance Improvement Award

Five FS member cooperatives were recognized by GROWMARK, Inc. for business performance improvement during the GROWMARK Annual Meeting in Chicago.

While introducing the award winners, Dennis Farmer, GROWMARK vice president of member services, said, “To achieve success in the agricultural industry requires determination, innovation, and imagination. Farmers count on their local cooperatives for products and services that are vital to their profitability. GROWMARK recognizes that our local grain and supply members excel at that mission.”

GROWMARK measures the improvement in the performance of member cooperatives based on return on invested capital. Over a five-year time frame, each cooperative's return on invested capital improvement is measured in comparison to other cooperatives in the System. From this measurement, the Performance Improvement Award was developed.

The cooperative with the highest degree of improvement was Thunder Bay Co-operative Farm Supplies, based in Thunder Bay, Ont. Ben Postuma is the general manager and Arnold Breukelman is president.

Ranking second was Piatt County Service Company, based in Monticello, Ill. Mark Orr was the general manager during the time period measured. John Hendrix was the president.

In third place was Wanstead Farmers Co-operative Company, based in Wyoming, Ont. John Turvey is the manager, and Joe Joosten was the president.
Ranking fourth was Stephenson Service Company, based in Freeport, Ill., Jay Kempel is the manager and Keith Meier is the president.

Ranking fifth was LaSalle County Farm Supply, now part of GRAINCO FS, based in Ottawa, Ill. Andy Wagner was the manager for the time period measured, and Steve Riskedal was the president.
